Even better: there’s a new ⌘⌥= keyboard shortcut to toggle highlighted text.Īmong a variety of other updates (you can read more about them on the developers’ blog), iA Writer 5.5 also comes with a powerful PDF preview (which supports custom templates, so I can export my drafts as PDFs that look like the MacStories website) and the ability to show multiple stats in the editor at once. When I used Scrivener to write one of my iOS reviews years ago, the ability to highlight text in the editor was one of my favorite options to mark specific passages for review with iA Writer 5.5, I can now highlight text and have a clear visual indication without giving up on the Markdown syntax. Highlighted text will turn yellow, and it’s impossible to miss. Version 5.5 also brings support for highlighting text inside a document by surrounding it with two equal signs – e.g. I’m so used to these two new pointer features in iA Writer 5.5, I wish more iPad apps adopted them. Besides obvious support for clicking toolbar buttons and other elements in the app’s UI, trackpad support includes the ability to swipe horizontally with two fingers to show/dismiss the Library sidebar (which I do all the time now) and – my favorite touch – support for clicking a document’s name in the title bar to rename it. On iPad, the app can now be fully controlled with the trackpad. I’ve been testing this version for quite some time (it’s the update I originally mentioned in my Modular Computer story back in April), and there are some fantastic details worth pointing out. IA Writer, my favorite text editor for all Apple platforms (which I still use as the central piece of my Markdown collaboration workflow via GitHub), has been updated today to version 5.5 both on Mac and iOS/iPadOS. However, for many users, I suspect iA Writer’s impeccable design and thoughtful features will outweigh its lack of certain power-user features. The update doesn’t go as far as an app like Obsidian when it comes to internal links. iA Writer 6, which is available on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, is a response to those changes that fits comfortably with the app’s existing feature set and design. However, the Markdown text editor market is changing rapidly, with tools for creating interlinked notes and documents in a variety of ways that have quickly become table stakes for text editors and note-taking apps alike. That’s as true of iA Writer 6 today as it was with previous versions. They’re easy to access, but they aren’t a distraction. Best of all, the app’s features stay out of your way while you’re writing. The app’s design is top-notch, and it offers a feature set that makes it among the best options for writing in Markdown. IA Writer has long been one of the premier text editors on Apple’s platforms. ![]() ![]() ![]() There's a secret in commercial kitchens about aluminum: It provides ultimate heat conduction and never rusts. Oven Safe: No | Materials: Metal | Dimensions: 16 x 10 x 1,85 inches Others find it hard to open, heavy, and difficult to maximize the middle rack. Since it’s made of metal, some users have seen rusting even after following the care instructions. This budget-friendly pick is not without some drawbacks. Unlike some other multi-tier options, each level is high enough to fit unfrosted cupcakes or even a pie or two. What we also like about this one is the height in-between the levels. “It collapses and is about the size of a rimmed sheet pan when folded, so it’s also space-saving." "This cooling rack has three levels, but only takes up the counter space of a single cooling rack, which is so convenient when baking a large number of cookies or muffins,” says Carol Borchardt, a personal chef and recipe developer. A collapsible cooking rack gets the job done more efficiently, and this one by Wilton can cool or store up to 36 cookies at a time. If you’re trying to cool multiple batches of cookies, your cooling rack will fill up quickly. You’d be surprised how much space a dozen cookies can take up. Oven Safe: Yes | Material: Stainless steel | Dimensions: 16.92 x 11.93 x 4.5 inches Note that some users think this cooling rack could be improved by adding rubber feet to the legs to stop it from sliding on the counter. But most importantly, the height is a great option for cooling multiple loaves of bread at once. When stacked, the space in-between the racks is about 4.5 inches tall, much larger than many tiered cooling racks, so you’re less likely to run into issues maneuvering your hands, cooking utensils, and baked goods in-between the racks. If you like the idea of a multi-tier cooling rack but don’t always need all the space, this model is stackable when you purchase multiple units. It’s oven-safe up to 575 degrees and has foldable legs-when tucked, the entire thing fits neatly in a half-sheet baking pan. It has a tight grid to prevent food from falling through and provides a sturdy base for heavy loaves of bread. If you’re unhappy with your current cooling rack due to these limitations, this one by Hamilton Housewares may be the one for you. Bakers often complain that food falls through the gaps, can’t be used in the oven, and don’t fit into standard baking pans. ![]() This cooling rack was designed to resolve a lot of the common issues that other models have. Whatever rack you choose, it will be a welcome addition to your kitchen arsenal, guaranteeing crispy fried chicken and loaves of bread that maintain their crackle-crust outside and pillowy inside. Some models are constructed with even heating convection materials, while others offer lifetime rust resistance. Most have grids to keep your food secure and not slipping through the cracks, but ladder styles are out there if you're looking to roast meat and want fewer crosshatch impressions. There are a number of choices on the market when it comes to cooling racks, from nonstick coated to oven safe. A cooling rack affords air circulation it elevates your food from becoming a soggy mess on the pan and allows steam to escape, preventing food from getting limp. Many are versatile and can pass from high-heat ovens to cool shelves ensuring roasted veggies aren't oil-soaked, but crispy, and fresh-baked cookies are gooey on the inside with a satisfying crunch on the outside.
